T&T duo, Fabien Whitfield and Daneil Williams finished 11th from 17 teams when the ninth stop of the 2014 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit ended at the USA Olympic Training Centre in Chula Vista, California, yesterday.
On Friday when the tournament served off, the local pair were beaten in their first two Pool B matches, first by Guatemalans Andy Blanco and Erick Garrido, 12-21, 10-21 and to USA-A’s, William Allen and Trevor Crabb 18-21, 13-21.
However, the Toco-born pair who last played together on the tour in October 2013 in St Lucia, rebounded on Saturday to beat Bonaire’s Percy Prudencia and Emanuel Silie 21-7, 21-3 in their final pool match before battling past Nicaraguans Ruben Mora and Gerson Contreras 21-19, 21-19 in their ninth to 16 playoff to end with a 2-2 record.
In the main draw quarterfinals, Canada-A team of Daniel Dearing and Garrett May defeated Blanco/Garrido 21-17; 21-16; Canada-B’s Cameron Wheelan/Michael Platinga outlasted Allen/Crabb (USA-A) 21-17, 16-21, 15-12; Puerto Rico’s Roberto Rodriguez and Erick Haddock
stopped USA-C’s Skyler Mc Coy/Martin Lorenz 21-12, 21-9 and Derek Olson/Avery Drost (USA-B) overcame Costa Rica’s Diego Alpizar/Julio Alvarez 21-11, 21-15.
Wheelan and Platinga met Rodriguez and Haddock in one semifinal while Dearing and May faced Olson and Drost.
