The Sports Company has partnered with the Tennis Association of T&T to advance and promote the sport of tennis among junior players, with the help of officials of the US Tennis Association.
Starting today, some 30 coaches and physical education teachers will complete the practical component of a specific course to teach under 10 tennis.
The participants have already completed several modules of the course online and the practicum takes place today from 9 am-3 pm at the Trinidad Country Club, Maraval.
Additionally, the USTA officials - Shelley Licorish and Robert Carlbo - will conduct a week long outreach programme at primary schools across Trinidad, with the aim of introducing children under 10 to the sport in a fun and engaging manner that also engrains the fundamental movements required for the sport.
According to TennisTT president Kendall Cuffy, the initiative is part of its thrust to increase the critical mass of children playing tennis, which in turn may lead to greater success for the country in the competitive game, regionally and internationally. Another ambition is for tennis to become the sport of choice for children under 10 and to make it more accessible to persons in rural communities.
The Sports Company assisted the NGB's effort by purchasing specialised equipment (smaller racquets, slower and lighter balls) for use during this outreach activity and beyond.
