T&T claimed just one medal at the CAC Games in Veracruz, Mexico, yesterday, when Christopher George sealed bronze with a commanding performance in the men’s judo 100kg division.

George joined Kwesi Browne (track cycling), Roger Daniel (shooting), George Bovell (swimming, also won gold), Curtis Humphreys/Dexter St Louis (table tennis doubles) and Dorian Alexander (taekwondo) on the list of T&T athletes who have won bronze since Tuesday. Thus far, T&T claimed one gold and seven bronze medals.

George, 30, won his contest against Jesse De Leon of the Dominican Republic with a clear Ippon, two Shidos and a Yuko.

De Leon claimed a Shido. George’s win came just over three hours following a table final loss to Mexico’s Sergio Garcia, who prevailed on an Ippon.

Devon Brito, meanwhile, represented T&T in the 90kg repechage final and was beaten by Lester Avalos of Guatemala, to finish the competition ranked seventh.

Two days prior, Khaliqa Mohammed represented T&T in the 48kg division and suffered a loss (Ippon) to Carolina Herrera of Puerto Rico to exit the competition.

On Friday, Sean Lawrence reached the  quarterfinal of the men’s 66kg division, where he was defeated (Ippon) by Gustavo Lopez of El Salvador.

That same day, Jelanie Boyce finished seventh in the men’s 81kg after losing the repechage final to Haiti’s Jean Jackly. Today, among the highly anticipated events is Emile Abraham and Varun Maharajh’s participation in the finals of the men’s road race. They will start in a line up of 60 competitors at 12.30 pm (TT time).

The hockey women will be seeking to add to T&T’s medal metal collection when they face Mexico in the bronze medal match from 3.30 pm.
