Kwesi Alleyne struck St Anthony’s into the top position in the premier division of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL), scoring a hat-trick to help the “Tigers” to a crushing 5-0 win over Carapichaima East at St Anthony’s College in West Moorings, yesterday.
St Mary’s and Arima North, the top two teams in the league before yesterday’s matches, both dropped points as the “Tigers” moved to the top in spectacular fashion. St Mary’s was held 1-1 by Fatima at the latter’s ground, while Arima lost 1-0 to St Benedict’s after a 33rd minute penalty from Tyrell Cautou. Yesterday the league also handed St Anthony’s three points and three goals for its match against St Benedict’s on Saturday, which never kicked off due to poor playing facilities in La Romaine.
Alleyne gave St Anthony’s an early lead yesterday with a goal in the eighth minute. Shakeem Patrick (19th) and Simon Joseph (22nd) scored in quick succession to give the “Tigers” a commanding lead halfway through the first half. The home team took the three-goal advantage into the break. Alleyne was on the scoresheet again in the 60th, before completing his hat-trick in the 70th minute. With the win the “Tigers” moved to nine points.
In a battle of south teams at Guaracara Park, Naparima came from a goal down to defeat Presentation College, San Fernando, 2-1. After a goalless first half, Levon Bass continued his goal scoring form to give Pres the lead in the 51st minute. Unfortunately for Pres, it could not hang on to the lead as Shane Sandy equalised 14 minutes later. The match seemed to be heading for a draw but Sandy was on target again in the 83rd to give his team the win.
Defending InterCol champion St Augustine Secondary defeated East Mucurapo 1-0, but lost one of its star players when Jesse Joseph broke his foot.
